Giving Tree Cafe spreads roots on Stewart Avenue

Any vegan who’s been through Ithaca recently will remember ABC Cafe, up on the hill between Cornell and downtown Ithaca. Ah, how I loved their giant buckwheat pancakes back in college! And some of us Ithaca vegans met up there for pizza nights, just last year.

Anyway, ABC closed. It wasn’t 100% vegan but it was a homey place we loved for its vegan-friendliness and its open mics and all the nice people who worked there, and we were sad to see it go.

Until now! Read on for exciting news about ABC’s new incarnation, Giving Tree Cafe, opening Wednesday, January 13th.

The beginning of 2010 brings new life as the Giving Tree Cafe is scheduled to open on Wednesday, January 13th. Giving Tree Cafe will be occupying the former ABC Cafe Space in lower Collegetown.

For many years, the corner of Stewart Avenue and Osmun Place has been the home of great dining and fine entertainment. The summer of 2009 brought the Ithaca community to the end of an era, as the ABC Cafe closed its doors after nearly 30 years. The Giving Tree Cafe will offer the same vibrant, community atmosphere provided in the past, as well as continuing with a familiar vegetarian menu (featuring vegan, raw, gluten free, local & organic food). At the Giving Tree you will also find local art displays, live regional music and much more.

Giving Tree Cafe owners/operators Ananda Barreno, Rob Delphous and Sean Lunny are all former ABC Cafe employees committed to providing the Ithaca area with an opportunity for fine vegetarian cuisine, in a casual atmosphere. The cafe will offer an extensive lunch and dinner menu, with a mouth watering weekend brunch that has defined lower collegetown for many years. In addition to the nightly international specials, look for delicious baked goods in the coffee shop/bakery, complete with specialty coffee and tea beverages in a comfortable, convenient environment.

The Giving Tree Cafe will offer vegetarian fare, providing vegan and allergy sensitive options whenever possible. Monthly art shows and live music on most nights of the week help define the space as more than just a restaurant, but a place for gathering and fostering community. Stop by and say hello, the cafe is located at 310 Stewart Avenue (right next to the Chapter House), and will be open Tuesday through Sunday, call for more information: 277-1100

Giving Tree Cafe is located at 310 Stewart Avenue, on the corner of Stewart Ave and Osmun Place.

Hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday 9am to 9pm (open later on nights with live music).

    1. I’m glad you found your way here and liked it! I guess I thought “vegan ithaca” should render more interesting results from Google than it had been able to muster back when we were moving here and looking for vegans… hopefully this blog is helping our visibility in a good way! 🙂
