Tonight’s Cayuga Deer protest will be focused on the individual animals whose lives hang in the balance. The organization has designed signs with photos of our local deer who live in and around Cayuga Heights, and they’re asking us to pick out one of these vulnerable animals so we can be their voice at tonight’s meeting of the Village Trustees. Click here to see some of the individuals who need your help.
The Cayuga Heights mayor and trustees are well on their way to implementing what is essentially a deer extermination program. After they’ve determined they have 20 deer in the village who are sterilized and tagged (including many who were already sterilized through a prior program), they have left the door open to killing every remaining deer found within the village borders, and they hope to do all the killing in one year. That means these animals need your help NOW. There’s no time to waste!
Please join Cayuga Deer at the protest tonight, and encourage others to attend as well.

6:30 PM – Peaceful Protest
7:00 PM – Public Comments at Trustee Meeting
Marcham Hall, 836 Hanshaw Rd., Ithaca (across from Community Corners) (Map)
Note: Comments are taken at the beginning of each meeting. If you plan to make a public comment, you will need to sign in when you come to the meeting and put an asterisk next to your name. There is a two-minute limit for each individual comment (strictly adhered to), and a maximum of 30 minutes for all comments.
Here’s what you can do:
1. Go to this link and select a deer whom you’d like to represent at tonight’s meeting: http://www.cayugadeer.org/conscience/signs.htm
2. Tell Cayuga Deer which sign you have selected, and they’ll print it out for you (email them at firstname.lastname@example.org). If you prefer, you are also welcome and encouraged to make your own signs for the protest.
3. Meet Jenny, James, Eric, and the other Cayuga Deer folks anytime between 6:30 and 7 PM tonight to retrieve your sign (Marcham Hall, 836 Hanshaw Rd). If you come closer to 6:30, you can be a part of the peaceful protest outside Marcham Hall. If you can’t make it until closer to 7:00, you can still take your sign inside and hold it during the meeting. Cayuga Deer will have extra signs available for those who are unable to contact them in advance.
You can hold your sign at the protest and also bring it inside with you to hold in your lap during the meeting. If enough of us are holding these signs, the trustees will see a sea of deer faces when they look out at the audience — the faces of some of the very individuals whose lives are at risk of being snuffed out. Since the trustees have so far shown very little sign of having a conscience in this matter, it is left to US to be their conscience. Will you help the deer?
If you can’t make it tonight, you can help spread the word to others in our community about Cayuga Heights’ deer-killing plan. A not-for-profit group called Save the Heights Deer has created great T-shirts, lawn signs, stickers, buttons and other items that will tell people that you care about the deer and that you support non-violent alternatives to resolving deer-human conflicts. The only way to turn this situation around is to get more people involved, so let Deer Gear help you start up those conversations around the community.
